This stuff is total nerd pr0n for the D&D community. Not only does this make stunning use of new technology, but it evolves the whole “pen and paper” gameplay quality of standard roleplaying games and creates a complete digital facsimile of the entire mechanic, from rolling the dice to marking stats on a character sheet. With technology becoming used in this manner, pen and paper RP is going the way of the newspaper. Of course, there will always be those few who prefer the paper medium, but it is very obvious that electronic entertainment is taking over and becoming the new standard.

A DCU MMO? Awesome! I’m a total fanboy so the idea of becoming immersed into an actual comic book universe is very appealing to me. I never got into City of Heroes, but that was probably because it was entirely unique. DCU Online actually features well known DC heroes and villains, so it’s much more nostalgic for me, and thus more appealing.

The character animation in the video doesn’t seem to be as fluid or well done as the player mechanics in World of Warcraft, but the physics engine and superpowers seem to make up for that.

In order to coincide with the feature film release of the Watchmen adaptation, Deadline Games, with publisher Warner Bros. Interactive, is developing Watchmen: The End is Nigh for PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows. The game will take place in the ’70’s and will be a prequel to the graphic novel, and considered to be canonical, meaning that the game will be considered a true prequel rather than a spinoff.

The game will center around characters and events that are mentioned in the graphic novel and will touch upon specific themes that shaped the world of the story into what it is in the novel. An interview with Dave Gibbons, the original Watchmen artist and advisor to the game developers, can be read here.

“Alan and I have always resisted doing any sort of back-story to the Watchmen graphic novel,” said Gibbons, “at various times it’s been suggested that we could do the Comedian’s Vietnam War Diaries or Rorshach’s journal, which we thought would be a bit dopey. But the precedent is, at the time the original comics came out, Mayfair games did a role-playing game that Alan helped write bits of, and it’s completely canon, so this game uses a lot of that less-well known material.”
