“It seems that in 1996, while LG was distributing the 3DO in Korea and Nintendo was distributed by Hyundai, Samsung had no competing game product of their own. While Samsung had previously sold a bootleg Master System (And a MegaDrive, although it is not known if this was an official or bootleg product) the Saturn was apparently licensed from Sega.

The hardware seems to be an interesting mix of both new and old model Saturn systems from Sega and licensees JVC + Hitachi. Most notable is the oval-button shell, which is the older style, combined with the smaller and newer mainboard which normally comes with a round-buttoned shell.”

Sean and I have been mourning the Sega Saturn ever since it’s line of games was halted back in the nineties. We’re both children of the 16-32 bit gaming generation, and this system was one of the milestones in our video life experience. With such games as Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS, and Fighter Megamix, this system really helped to further advance our interest in video games.

I know Sean in particular regretted getting rid of the Saturn (although he kept his Guardian Heroes game disc, good move on his part), and desires, as I do, to reconnect with those old games we used to play back in the day. I feel as if the games of the past, although not as theatrical and as high scale as today’s video game productions, still offered up a good game experience and lots of fun. This is really a blast from the past to be able to see a functional Saturn still in existence. I always wanted one of my own, but I had to settle for the super lame 32X add-on for the Sega Genesis. Sort of like a lamer’s bastardized Saturn mod for the Genesis.

I’d like to see companies like Sega and Nintendo compile all of their past games and mass re-release them. I’d definitely pick up something like that. I don’t mean the classic games that have been re-released before, but the little known innovational games, such as the afforementioned Guardian Heroes and Fighter Megamix. Or maybe I’m just asking too much of greatness…
